Navigating Life in Japan: Challenges and Realities

Living in Japan is a dream for many, with its rich culture, advanced technology, and renowned hospitality. However, behind the picturesque scenes lies a tapestry of challenges that residents face on a daily basis. We reached out to our team members who have called Japan home for varying lengths of time to delve into their experiences and shed light on the realities of life in Japan.


Length of Residence:

  • 21 years

  • 15 years

  • 10 years

  • 3.5 years


Comfort Level:

While some members expressed a high level of comfort living in Japan, others highlighted challenges, particularly related to language comprehension and integration into activities, especially for their children.

  • "Yes, very comfortable."

  • "Language comprehension is the biggest barrier, not just for me, but also accessing activities for my kids."


Biggest Challenge in Japan:

Language emerged as the predominant challenge, encompassing speaking, understanding, and learning Kanji. Other challenges included fitting into the work culture and helping children learn the language.

  • "Learning Kanji was the biggest challenge for me."

  • "Trying to fit work life."

  • "Language lessons help, but I don't know how to help my kids learn the language."


Solutions to Overcome Challenges:

Respondents emphasized the importance of language learning through Japanese lessons. Some suggested efforts from both sides—foreigners learning Japanese and Japanese people being more proactive in engaging with foreigners. Others set high goals, such as obtaining translation certificates, to motivate their language learning journey.

  • "I guess, just need to do Japanese lessons. The problem is all my friends and neighbors do not speak English."

  • "I set a high goal, such as obtaining a translation certificate, and I tried very hard to learn Kanji in order to achieve it."


Expectations vs. Reality:

The members' expectations of life in Japan varied, with some expecting challenges but finding the reality to be more comfortable and safe than anticipated. Others highlighted the learning curve, including discovering cultural nuances like "HONNE and TATEMAE." Despite the challenges, many found Japan to be a comfortable and safe environment.

  • "I was thinking living in Japan is very hard, but actually is not."

  • "Japan is comfortable and safe. Clean environment and people are not into your business. So feel better than anywhere else."


These responses reflect the diverse experiences and perspectives of individuals living in Japan, highlighting both the challenges and comforts of life in the country.
